Rural Energy Center

Rural Energy Center

Mission

The mission of the REC is to facilitate sustainable energy decisions in rural Colorado. This work is rooted in the following guiding principles:

  • Colorado’s current energy system provides benefits like inexpensive and reliable energy.
  • It also has costs like pollution and faces challenges like limited fossil resources.
  • Rural Colorado contains much of the state’s produced and potential energy.
  • Rural communities face complex choices about our energy system that affect us all.
  • We can work creatively to find solutions that address both economic and environmental challenges in energy.

Who We Are

The REC is led by Cary Weiner, Energy Specialist for CSU Extension. Cary develops strategy for the Center and creates partnerships with other University personnel to test what is possible in sustainable energy for rural Colorado.

The REC is also part of the CSU Energy Institute family. The Energy Institute serves as the nucleus of energy research, education, and outreach for the faculty, staff, and students of the University. The REC hires students as funds allow to both support our work and to train the next generation of leaders seeking integrated solutions to rural energy challenges.
